About Perunggu Baru Kualitas dan Antik

Perunggu Baru Kualitas dan Antik, Malayan for Recent and Antique Quality Bronzes, is specialized in serving collectors of older and high quality contemporary Javanese bronzes. It excists for over 11 years and has developed from what started as a hobby: collecting bronzes.

I was born in Soerabaya, Dutch East Indies at that time and spent my early childhood overthere. After moving to Australia and India with my family and finally ending up in the Netherlands, the east kept calling and I started traveling to Java and Bali since 1989. From that time I collect bronzes and my curiosity and knowledge about their cultural and religious background have been growing ever since, especially with the help of my Javanese and Balinese friends. Now I regard Indonesia, especially Bali as my "second Homeland" and I travel there at least twice a year.

I do not have the costs associated with operating a retail space, as I literally live between my sculptures. This allows me to offer the same high quality works as a retail gallery but at a lower price. You are welcome to view my collection by appointment. On this website you can only see a part of it.

About casting bronze

The technique of casting bronze images, originally coming from China and India developed on Java around 800, together with the introduction of Hinduism. This age old and most simple technique of casting bronze, the Cire Perdue or Lost Wax method is still used on Java nowadays. First a wax model is made and then covered with clay. The clay is hardened by heating and the wax melts away through a hole. Now we have a hollow mold, wich is filled with hot bronze. After cooling, the mold is destroyed and we have one solid and unique bronze. Examples of this technique: see Index 6. Javanese "Primitive" Images.
