WAB Rule Suggestions

WAB for little kids

When I play at home, my two sons are always peeking at the tabletop warriors. They are just big enough to look over the table. Of course they want to do "like big daddy does". So it is playing WAB for them too. But they are too young to understand all the difficult rules and the difficult dice rolls...

I simplified the game too play with them too from time to time.

  • All units move using little sticks to represent their maximum movement. I got two sort; one for the infantry and one for the cavalry (which is twice as long). They lay down to stick next to the unit and move it up to the length of the stick.
  • All units throw 1 dice. The result is the amount of dead soldiers the enemy has to remove.
  • Cavalry deaths are divided by two and rounded down. So the possibilities are:
    1: 0 casualty
    2: 1 casualty
    3: 1 casualty
    4: 2 casualties
    5: 2 casualties
    6: 3 casualties
(Make a table of this. They like looking this up.)
  • Elephants. They always want elephants. I wonder why  ;-)  are only death on a 6. They have two lives.
  • Generals are also only removed on a 6.
  • For missile fire you throw with one dice for every model in the front rank. A 6 kills.
  • The kids always win. So you simply have to put more soldiers on their side.

It is a great way to learn them to count and recognize numbers. Have fun!

Dungeons and dragons for little kids

When my oldest son got 4 years, we gave him a dungeons and dragons set. We thought he would like the plastic models in it. But he started enjoying playing D&D !

Here too we simplified the rules to make it an enjoyable game for the kids.

  • Build a dungeon with the heroes on one end, lots of monsters (20) in between and a big treasure on the other end.
  • Place some markers on the dungeon. Every time they find a marker they receive a random magic item from a deck of item cards. After using this item it is put back into the deck.
  • Magic items can be the following:
magic missile: kills a monster from a distance. One use only.
magic armour: The monster may not hit. One use only.
magic weapon: kills a monster instantly. One use only.
    Potions: receive an extra live.
  • The monsters get a dice with more low numbers (e.g. 1,1,1,2,2,3)
  • The heroes (the players) get a dice with larger numbers (e.g. 0,1,2,3,3,4)
  • The heroes get 5 lives. The monster only 1.
  • In a battle a monster and the hero throw one dice. The highest score wins. Is the score is the same, both fight another round. If the hero scores a bad result (e.g. 0) he lost his sword and misses completely (everybody laughs), and if he hits high score (e.g. 4) he kills the monster in a gruesome way (also good for an enthusiastic kid).

Enjoy!
