ADVICE:
Repairing lighters is in many cases a job for experts. When you are not certain you are able to make the repair, I'll advise you to let your retailer do the job for you.

Always be aware of the danger when you are working with lighters. They look somewhat innocent but can become very dangerous when malfunction.

Often you used your lighter for quite some time, or bought it at an auction. It is still a beautiful thing but one way or the other it is not functioning well any more.
You can use this page to find out what problem occurs to your lighter.

Problem: Cause / solution:
Lighter using flints gives no sparks even with a new flint inside. The clutch spring is broken / An old flint is blocking the way under the spark wheel (oxidation will expand the flint).
Piezo lighter does not ignite. When the lighter has fell, the cristal is broken (no repair possible, just replace)

Dirt has blocked the burner nozzle.

The anode is too close to the burner nozzle. (needs about 2mm. of space between them)

Electrical lighter does not ignite. Battery is down (use new 12 V. one).

The switch is broken.

The elco cannot hold power. (see Electr.lighter)

Fuel lighter gives no flame (ignition is ok). Previous owner put in the wrong kind of petrol. Remove the cotton. Put in new with the right lighter-fluid.

The wick is too short.

Butane lighter gives no flame (gas is inside the tank / ignition is ok). The adjusting wheel fits too tight.

Burner valve is blocked. See 'Modern burner' / 'Ronson repair' for solution.

Butane lighter gives no flame (no gas in the tank). This is often the problem with the Maruman lighter. It is a nice and reliable inletvalve, but is not quite standard. Often not able to get gas in it.

Look at īMaruman repairī for the solution.

Fuel lighter leaks. Too much fuel inside the tank.

The cotton is old and sticky. (replace it. Make sure it is tight in the tank)

The rubber at the inlet is dry and porous.

Butane lighter leaks. BE VERY CAREFUL! the inlet valve is broken. DO NOT repair this but replace it.

The burner valve leaks. Replace rubber seal.

Plastic tank is broken. No repair!

Metal tank is broken. You can resolder the tank but this is a job for experts!

Flame is too high. At the adjusting wheel is often a blocking attached. Remove this temporarely. Adjust the flame and replace the blocking.
