Inside
of a Silver Match
Like some other brands (Poppel, Feudor, Stratoflame) Silver Match used
disposable tanks. When the tank was empty, you bought an new tank, and
in the same time you changed the burner valve. A very reliable system
until the manufacturer stopped producing these tanks. Many Silver
Matches were produced in the 60's, and now fourty years later it is
almost impossible to get tanks (at least full ones!).
The burners however are build very reliable and are surely capable in
doing service a second time. But you need to get new gas (safely !) into
the tank. The solution is simple, just place an inlet valve into the
metal tank.
Notice the following tips for safety:
- Do NOT disassemble a lighter near open fire.
- Do NOT smoke.
- Be sure to ventilate the room you are working in.
- Test your lighter in water, NOT with a flame.
First, remove all the rest gas from the tank. You can do this by
removing the burner valve from the tank. Let this 'open' tank rest for
at least one day (the gas will come out very slowly!). Behind the burner
valve (about 1 cm) there is place for an inlet valve. Before you start,
check if the tank will fit again in the lighter. At this place you have
about 1.5 mm margin in the casing.
Now you can drill a hole in the tank. Drill slowly, don't make sparks.
Degrease the tank and solder a fitting in the tank (in this fitting you
can screw the inlet valve later). To make a gasleak-free fitting I use
the acid 'S-39', the kind they use for soldering the waterworks in the
house. Use a soldering iron instead of fire. Fire gets too hot and will
melt the rubber in you burner valve. Keep this burner valve as cool as
you can with a pliers. The metal of the pliers will help to transport
the heat from the valve.
Apply the inlet valve, replace the burner parts, put some gas
into the tank and place the tank in a glass of water to search for
gas-leaks. If you done your job well, there are no bubbles to be seen
coming from either the inlet as the burner valve. Clean the tank (remove
the residue of the S-39, and place the tank back into the lighter.
Be careful to adjust the flame the first time!
Note: We are not responsible for the consequences of any kind
caused by improper use of the materals advised in this site.
We cannot say it enough: Be VERY careful during the proces; YOU
WORK WITH BUTANE GAS IN A PRESSURIZED TANK !
