Drawa Poland

On this page you will find an impression of our 16 day paddling tour over the Drawa, a river located in the north west of Poland.
The river flows through a slightly hilly landscape covered with large cornfields, woods and lakes. Although the area is cultivated, large parts of the river seem to be untouched. Characteristics of the river are: Crystal clear water, a lot of fish, flows through woods, crosses lakes and marshlands. On clear nights round the campfire we admired the Milky Way.
Between road 175 and Prostynia the river flows through a military terrain where passage was more or less tolerated. Nearby Drawno is the entrance of the national park; here rapid currents have sculpted an attractive canyon; at some places nearly 30 meters deep and overgrown with diverse standing timber.
Besides standing timber there is also a lot of lying timber, blocking the river in various degrees of density. This gave the tour besides an extra adventurous touch also the feeling of doing an endless hurdle by canoe.

We paddled the river end of July 2004. Although some pictures may suggest we were alone, we met we met a lot of nice and interesting people during our tour. Our Kids were 4, 9 and 11 years.

How to find your way? The willows along the banks had theirs branches very low above the surface of the river.

Shopping in Drawsko Pomorski, the biggest village/city along the part we paddled. We were amazed by the amount of small grocery shops providing daily needs.

This could have been "Mr. Wesley's magically expanded car" taking into account all the different food supplies that were available from this driving food store.
