     Edges & Console

    1.
This guest tutorial was brought to you by the good people at 32teeth. You can check out their pretty minimalist style site at thirtytwoteeth.com.
    2.
Create a new layer. Add a mask˛ to the new layer. Inverse tha mask (Ctrl+I).
    3.
Now that you have the mask ready to go, go on and make some selections. Remember to hold down the Shift key for multiple selections.

For this example we used one big main circle and three small ones, of which, only two will be connected to the main one.
    4.
With the selection still 'selected' switch over to the mask channel we created earlier. Press Ctrl+I to invert the selected area. There you are, the selected part is now white.
    5.
With the mask channel still in front of you, we need to make the white part like a console (sort of like an amoeba for you scientists, or lava lamp for you hippies). What you do is select Filter > Gaussian Blur, and just play with the radius until the small white circles touch the big one.
    6.
Now, while still on the mask channel, select Image > Adjust > Levels and just adjust the point closer to the center until the blur is almost solid and smooth.

Presto, now it is time to switch back to the actual canvas. And since we are doing simple outlines we will color this layer with white using the Paint Bucketš.
    7.
Right click on the layer you just filled in and select effects from the pop up menu. Here you will want to unclick the Drop Shadow to get rid of it and from the drop down select Outer Glow. Here you will want to make some changes. Change the Mode to 'Normal' and the Opacity to 100%. Select a dark color like dark blue or black. Change the Blur to 1 pixel, and the Intensity to somewhere between 300 and 600, depending on how dark you want the outline to be. Hey ... now there is your outlined console.
    8.
What you can do now, to make it a bit more appealing is create a new layer, on which you will want and alpha channel again. Use the same selections as you did in step 2, but this time before you go deleting anything from the alpha channel, choose Select > Modify from the menu, and the Contract. For this option, contract the selection by 2-4 pixels, do the other previous alpha steps and color it in white. This time give it some sort of Bevel And Emboss effect instead of the Glow as in step 6. Repeat this step again with a new layer, contract your selection 2 times by 2-4 pixels, and give it the same Bevel And Emboss effect as the previous layer, but now, select the down radio button to give it a carved out look. You should have something like the image on the right. Go on and experiment with other shapes.
