Author: Betty Smith
Genre: fiction
Rating:
Francie Nolan, the main narrative character, is a bright girl growing up in
Brooklyn at the beginning of the 20th century. She is born in a poor family, has
to work hard for her being all her life, but still manages to dream in the
meantime. Different characters influence her life and her thoughts. There is
Katie, her mother, a very strong woman, who wants the best for all her children,
but favors Neeley, Francie's younger brother. He is a realistic boy, wants to
work as soon as he can. He looks a lot like the father Johnny. Johnny is a
singer, but mostly a drunk. He has a really big heart and always wants the best
for his children, especially Francie. She can get a good education because of
him and so getting a good basis for the rest of her life, learning the thing she
loves: writing. There are also two sisters of Katie, Evy and Sissy, that have a
great influence on the little girls life.
All these people make the story one to read. We get to see that a woman's life
in the 1910's isn't easy, but we can also see there are many things that are
worthwhile and the hope that if you want to make something of your life, you can
accomplish it by trying and have strength and faith.
