Title: Stepford
wives
Author: Ira Levin
Genre: thriller
Rating:
Joanna, Walter and
their two kids just moved to Stepford. This little town is friendly, wives are
devoted to housework and their families. Nothing wrong....only, the strange
thing is, it seems that the wives haven't got time for anything else. Another
strange thing is that there is only one men's club and there is nothing for
women to do. There used to be, but it is said that the women lost interest.
Joanna's suspicion that something strange is going on grows in the time she
lives there and comes to a climax when her best (and only) friend Bobbie goes
through "the change" too.
A good enough story,
but I was glad that the book only had 151 pages. Levin did a good job as not to
drag the plot along, what he easily could have done, with a story like this.
Some parts I thought were made to be a movie, and that is one thing I didn't
like about the book. Some parts, especially the chase in the snowy woods, were
too sensational. Hints and "plants" were (too) obvious, but it all
makes the story round and the "pay-offs" rewarding.
