Title: Chocolat
Author: Joanne Harris
Genre: fiction
Rating:
Vianne Rocher and her daughter Anouk come to a little town in France.
Vianne opens a chocolate store opposite the church. Vianne is seen as a danger
to many people in the village, especially Father Reynaud, but there are some more open-minded
people as well
that embrace her and her very special sweets. With Vianne a new "wind"
blows through the village, the chocolate store as the "center of the hurricane".
Now, the people have a place to meet and talk about everything. Because of the
special gift Vianne has, some people dare to dream, stand up for
themselves.
When there is a plan for a chocolate festival on Easter Sunday the town divides
into two camps: it's "church or chocolate". Who will win?
This book is a hard one to review. I liked the story and characters, but
at the other hand I didn't like Harris's writing and the way she portrays the
characters. Take Vianne; the first time we "meet" her, we know there
is something magical about her and at some points it's really clear in the
story, but because of her gift I wanted to see more of it. If you give your
character such a special gift, dare to use it to its full extant. I feel like
Harris didn't. Also Roux, one of the gypsy people; he is mysterious, but just
not enough. So by making the characters even more interesting and using their
and her own potential Harris could have
made a really great book, now it's just good.
