Title: The age of
innocence
Author: Edith Wharton
Genre: (romantic) fiction
Rating:
I
want to say I loved the book, but I didn’t. Although the book had everything a
good romantic drama should have (a man, a woman, a difficult situation in an
environment full of rules) for some reason I couldn’t get into the story, with
the exception of the last chapter. That one was lively written with a good
balance between information and dialogue.
Lawyer
Archer Welland comes from a fortunate family in New York. He is to be married
with May. In comes Countess Ellen (“such an ordinary name”) Olenska. She is
separated from her husband in (the wild) Europe and is seen as a free woman,
something that is not positive in that time and age. Welland is assigned to her
case, which is to get her back with her husband. But of course they develop
feelings for each other. The problem is, they can’t act out their feelings,
because of her place in New York society and his upcoming marriage to May, the
cousin of Madam Olenska. What should they do about their feelings and what
choices do they have to make?
Like
I said, I didn't love the book like I loved Pride
and prejudice by Jane Austen, but I
liked in nonetheless.
