In fact for my hobby "music" I don't need him. My tube amplifiers and two splendidly sounding speakers are sufficient. Only when I want to enjoy a movie I turn on my 5.1 amplifier and than... ehm.. then you misses nevertheless the nice low of a subwoofer. Mmm, there are quite much devises for it. Generally square boxes, the one still larger than the other. But for the 10 time that I watch a movie, I didn't wanted a big, large sub in the living. I was looking for something small. After walking around in my living I decided to make a subwoofer that would fit under the couch. A nice experiment.. Maybe it's not the ideal sub for a home-theatre but for the 10 times a year I think it is enough for me. The most woofers on my list where to deep. Than I saw an article in the Klang&Ton. They used the Mivoc XAW 210-HC. This one could fit in a 10 cm deep case. Yes, yes, I know...It's not a Focal, Peerless, Vifa or ScanSpeak unit, but a nice woofer that costs little. And it will fit in a 25 liter case.
Here you see a drawing of what it will look like.
22mm thick MDF, 61 cm deep, 122 cm long, 13 cm high, two woofers.....and the resultant is 2 x 26 liter...
Here you see a simulation of one woofer.
Now order the woofers, create time to build it and than testing....
At last, today the 3rd of June the woofers arrived from Germany. (cheaper then order them here in Holland) But first finish the surround-project that I am working on.
As I told before this is a design from the HobbyHifi (1/2004)
Here you can see some graphics/simulations of the sub.
Airspeed in BR-pipe
Group delay
Maybe a little high, but lets give it a try. The BR-pipe is tuned at 29.2 Hz, will be 47.25 cm in length and intern a diameter from 68 mm. This all results in a -3dB point of 27.1 Hz. Pretty low for such a small sub. Only the rendament dropt to 87.1 dB....a well... The wood cost me 22 euros an the woofers 50 euros each...
10 June 2004.
Today started with the wood. The top and bottom are made of a standard size 22mm thick MDF plate (122 x 61 cm).
The rest is also 22mm thick and 88mm high. That results in 22 + 88 = 110 mm....5 mm more then the woofer needed...
Now wait till its dry...

Today I started with the painting of the sub. To finish and create a good looking case, over the 22 mm MDF box I made from 8mm MDF a second "case. And with round edges on it (also 8mm) this is a very fine finish. The picture below will give a impression what I mean.
Her above you see the 8mm MDF on the BR-tube. Works perfect....
Layer 1 of black. Two to go (I think)..
Everything is done and time to connect it to the amp and test it.
As you can see it fits perfect under the couch. Now the testing.... I've been listening to cd's and DVD and came to the conclusion the sub is doing great. For a low-budget sub, it's working good, goes low and fits perfect in the total sound. A small note is on his place here. Do not expect a giant sub for this money. A REL or other sub that I've made worked better, but costs more. For example my Infinity sub (se picture below) was more musical, played louder but costs more. But for the maybe 10 times I use it with a DVD it's good. Stands not in the way and makes you "feel" the movie.
The priority of this project was a small, flat, "invisible" sub fore a couple of time use per year. And it is. Not the best musical sub, but for 130 euros it was a fine project.
