Schellbootbunker 1

Schnell-boot bunker 1 (SBB1) was the first schnell-boot bunker constructed in Ijmuiden. The construction was used till the end of the war. When ready the bunker had space for ten schips (NOT U-boote). At the end of the war there was only space for four ships. This was because of the allied bombardments. The allied tried several times to demolish the bunker. First with 1000 lbs bombs, later on with havier ones and in the end with 12000 lbs-bombs. After the bombardment with the 12000lbs bombs the middle-front and middle-back of the bunker was gone. At other places there were two big holes in the roof. A while ago "study-group. BOA" and "foundation WOVIJ" (WOVIJ can be found at the link-section in the main-page) found remains of the bunker at a location where a building is planned. We visited the place and made some pictures. When the Germans found out that their bunkers could be destructed they stopped the construction of the SBB2

The railway and a dock.

"Sonder Konstruction" for storing torpedos

This bunker was a SK. That means that it was not a standart type bunker. On the upper picture yuo can see the front of the bunker. There is still a small-railway going inside the building. The picture under shows the left-side of the construction. We didn't placed a ground plan because it is just one big room.

Schnell/Raum - boot.

Many "s-boote" were based in Ijmuiden. In the war between 100 and 150 of these ships were produced. The ships were fast and small (27 to 35 meters long and 4 to 5 metres wide depending on the class). As weapons there were two Torpedo-pipes, at the fron of the ship and on the back-deck of the newer classes there was a 3cm flak placed. The ships had a Daimler-Benz engine and were able to reach 40 knots. Later in the war the R-boot (Raum-boot) was introduced. These ships could be used in rough seas, but where not as fast as the s-boot. As well the s-boot as the R-boot were known by the allied as "e-ship" "enemy ship".
