Tana Toraja is one of the beautiful regions in South Sulawesi, in Indonesia as well. From a distance, ones can see the jagged ridges of the hills stretching side by side along the slopes of the mountains. More than this, ones can also find beautiful valleys in which bamboos and sugar palms grow up. And the traditional houses with curved roof among the paddy fields that are beautifully and naturally carved and colored by the skillful people of Tana Toraja.
Before the Dutch come to power in this high land in the 20th century, there was no even a single word given for the name of their religion instead of the word "aluk" which refers to a ritual ways and daily lives activities that are to be controlled, without special instruction of how to build a house, to cook a rice, to greet boys and the head of the village, and the number of buffaloes and pigs that must be slaughtered in every ritual ceremony.
One of the principles of this teaching is to apply `give and take ` tradition among them. Blesses and curses used to come between the one who is still a life and the spirits of his or her ancestry. The most prestigious ceremony in Tanatoraja is the death ceremonial.
More than half of the people of Tanatoraja are Christians. They still up hold and proud of their cultural heritage in welcoming the guests ritually.
Makale is the capital of Tanatoraja regency. Most of steep hills here are crowned with the church towers, while the valleys are dominated by the new government offices. Most of the office take the form of the Torajan's traditional houses with the specific curved roofs and carvings. Tondon, Suaya, and Sangalla are the places which directly connected with the west TORAJA. During the market days, these towns seems to be the center of the activities because people from a distance come with their home industry products such as mats, baskets, carvings, and cattle.
Among the town in Tanatoraja regency, Rantepao is the second largest town after Makale. As the locations of most of the interesting place are within 15 kilometers away from this town, then this makes a lot of profit for Rantepao.
Sangalla
Sangalla is a village which is located on a hilly valley. It lies among the leafy bamboo trees. Here you can find an interesting object of tourism , that is a special cemetery of young babies. More than that, the cemetery of King Sangalla can be found at one of the slopes of the hills in this village which is named Suaya.
These graves are carved on the hills sides. They are the resting places of the seven kings and their families of Sangalla kingdom. "Tau-tau" of the kings and their families are placed in front of the stone graves. They are dressed traditionally in accordance with the dress of Kings of toraja. Not far away from this place, you can find a Tongkonan house that was built by the king of Sangalla which nowadays is known as "Museum Buntu Kalando".
Even though, the model of this museum is quite new, in it you can find several past kingdoms properties and some house equipments which formerly were the belongings of King Sangalla (Puang Sangalla).
Lemo
In Lemo graveyards you can see the veranda of `Tau-tau' mixed up together with the steep coral stone museum in the open air, which seems to be combination between death, arts, and ritual. "Tau-tau" is a small wooden statue which sometimes is made of bamboo tree. This statue is considered to accommodate the spirits of the pass by persons
Londa
Londa is a steep sides graves. One of its sides located on a higher place from the hills which has a deep caves where you can see coffins that are arranged and grouped based on the family lines. On the other side of hill, on the balcony, dozen of `tau-tau' seems to be a life, stand straight with eyes opened, are looking over the beautiful landscape of this area.
Kete Kesu
Kete kesu is a village which is still characterized by traditional lives of toraja people. If you take a look from the front side, you will find it lies over in the middle of the wide paddy fields with beautiful sequences of curved roofs and carved walls barns. The village consists of four traditional tongkonan houses of toraja. Inside one of the Tongkonans, there is something like a small museum which is located in the middle of the ground floors. Most of the people of this village have a good mastery in carving and painting. This can be seen among them who are doing carves and paints. The carved bamboos and woods are marketed in various villages around this village.
Marante
Marante is a village which has a lot of tongkonans, big paddy barns and big rocky hills that containing hanging stone graves which the local people called `Erong".
To'barana Sa'dang
There are people having the opinion that To'barana Sa'dang is the center of the Toraja area. At certain parts of these villages there are four rice barns that are very well kept with a neat grass yard. very interesting Toraja weavings are displayed and sold in this village. Around the village, terraces of rice fields are also beautiful to
look at.
Palawa
Walking along the river Sa'dang towards the north will take us to Palawa, Tau-tau and Tongkonan welcoming the visitors. Tongkonan palawa is one of the tongkonans that is interesting with traditional houses. At lies on top of a hill in the middle of a shady bamboo trees. The pictures of this 'tongkonan' are placed in tourism magazine abroad.
Nanggala
In the Nanggala traditional village you can see a row of 144 big rice barns. With arch shape roofs and carved walls they stand in front of two traditional houses of former Nanggala king. Some of its carvings are with blends of modern and traditional themes.
Buntao
Buntao is very interesting village to visit, particularly during the market day. Buntao has 'patane' which is a cemetery in the form of a Toraja House. And on the hill around the village there are many old graves.
Tondon
It is located at small road near Makale market. At one side of the hill there are rows of 'Tau-tau' in front of the cave cemetery. The cemetery belongs to noble families.
Batutumonga
The location is in the area of Sesean that has a cold climate, around 1300 meters above the sea level. In this area there are 56 'menhir' stones in a circle with five trees in the middle. Most of the 'menhir' stones are two till three meters high. A magnificent scenery can be seen from this place which makes this place interesting to be visited.
Lokomata
Lokomata is located approximately 35 kilometers from Rantepao , unfolding a very interesting view from 4 stages of large stones at the roadside that has around 60 steep stone hill cemeteries enriched with the view of rice fields terraces, hills and valleys beneath it.
Makula
At this place there is a hot spring, besides it there is a resting houses that has a bathing pool with a flowing spring source of water. At the front there is a small concrete pool with hot water that flows from the rear of the house. This place is very good for immersing in hot water after a long journey.
Bori
The location is 6 kilometers from Rantepao on the way to Sa'dang and palawa. Interesting to see in Bori are the high 'rante', 'menhir' stones where half of them are a few meters high.
Penanian
Traditional 'tongkonan' houses that have carved walls and columns can be seen in this place. The rice barns in this village are new and depicts new designs in its carvings.
Karassik
Karassik consists of bamboo houses that are painted in many colors in a row at the ritual ceremony area, 'rante' and a number of 'menhir' stones.
